Enjoying Your Ham for Longer
A Christmas ham often lasts well beyond Christmas Day, but only if it’s stored correctly. With the right care, your ham can stay moist, flavourful, and safe to enjoy for up to three weeks.
Keep It Sealed Until You’re Ready
When you pick up your ham, keep it in the vacuum-sealed packaging until you’re ready to serve. Once opened and carved, you’ll need to store it properly to prevent it from drying out.
How to Prepare Your Ham Bag
Your ham bag keeps the ham fresh by maintaining moisture around the surface. Follow these steps:
-
Wash your ham bag before use.
-
Mix roughly 2 cups of cold water with 1 tablespoon of vinegar.
-
Soak the ham bag in the solution, then wring it out gently.
-
Place your ham inside the bag and store it in the coldest part of your fridge.
-
Every three days, rinse and re-soak the bag in a fresh solution.
If you don’t have a ham bag, a clean tea towel or two will do the job.
Storing Leftover Ham
For smaller portions or sliced ham, skip the bag. Instead, store your ham in an airtight container in the fridge. Always use clean utensils when serving to keep it food-safe.
How Long Will It Last?
A whole or half leg ham on the bone should last up to three weeks if cared for correctly. For food safety, use a new ham bag for every new ham you purchase.
Keep It Fresh, Keep It Special
Your Christmas ham is the result of craft, care, and quality ingredients. Treat it the same way once it’s home, and you’ll enjoy it well beyond Christmas Day.
